How to make fun food using ordinary kitchen items

In this post, I would like to share a super easy way to have fun with food without any special bento tools. Just with items that you can find in your own kitchen. “Bento-ing” does not need to be difficult. Cute food does not need to be fancy or take too long to make, it should be fun and healthy.

Here is what I used to make this frog face bento lunch.
1. Water bottle’s cap
2. Drinking straw
3. Round-shaped small bowl, for example, soup bowl, coffee cup or any sauce bowl
4. For food, you will need cheese, small peas and black beans.
First, line small peas in the shape of frog face on top of rice or other food of your choice. (Pour in little by little is easier to play with) I used the edge of water bottle’s cap to cut out the frog’s eyes shape (round shape) I use a water bottle’s cap because it is food safe. (I do not recommend using a play dough stencil or any other thing that is not food safe contact material.) Then I used a drinking straw to cut out the frog’s nose. Push the drinking straw into the cheese to cut out the shape. Next gently squeeze the straw to release the cheese from the straw. Cut two times for 2 pieces of cheese to make a nose. Then I used a round-shaped soup bowl to cut out the frog’s mouth. You will need to cut it 2 times with the bowl to get a good shape of a smiling mouth.

And don’t forget to place 2 pieces of black beans for making the eyes pop out.

For the rabbit rice, I used my own hand to shape the rice. You can dampen your hand a little before you touch the rice to prevent it from sticking and help the rice maintain its shape. (This is the same trick from making sushi) Or you can use a plastic wrap to wrap the rice in to help you shape it as well.

Now time to serve with your favorite food, for example, grill chicken, steam vegetable, and a choice of fruit.
Enjoy! (^_^)
