Like many have already said, keep it simple & make it fun. I am always amazed at what my kids are willing to try when it looks fun.
As a bento beginner like me, browse around bento blogs to first get an idea of what kind of creations are around there and if anything inspires you. Conduct a little research on what tools you might need to design your desired bento. And then shop away on allthingsforsale.com!
Just to start simple. take a lunch you already know is loved and “bento” it up. Use cookie cutters and things already on hand and start simple (like everything one shape-ie a star) Go for the more complex after you learn.
-Keep it simple, either start with a box that’s already set up in sections, or a fun one you like (because you’ll actually remember to take it with you) and a set of silicone cups. Then, vary it up.
-Try some traditional fare, but pack things you normally eat. -Line cool sections with lettuces or spinach leaves and then tuck in a few cherry tomatoes, or baby carrots in the corners.
-Don’t be afraid to ask in forums like the ‘justbento’ one, and last
-don’t get overwhelmed if your lunch doesn’t look super kawaii, tiny things like faces on eggs, and broccoli trees are good intro steps.

What you would recommend to create a healthy bento lunch?
As with others, simple is best. I also find that going for colorful is not only a good way to make it look pretty, it also ensures you have a variety of foods in there (particularly when it comes to fruits and veggies). Also, don’t try to stuff the box. It may look small, but when it comes to eating you will find there is plenty to fill you up–I’m 27 and a non-stuffed small/kid’s bento provides plenty for me on lunch.
Well I am brand new to bento and just started with my order from your company this past week. My 5 year old loves it for her afternoon school snack! The lock & lock container with the 4 section containers inside is perfect to start. It has been simple so far, any small fruit like blueberries or cut up pieces of others with an adorable pick (I bought the pink and white bunnies and a set of the animals) is a big hit. I used the cutters to make bear and bunny shaped cheeses, and throw simple things like rice cakes, mini cinnamon bun, etc in the others.
The 4 compartments are a good reminder to put in something from each food group as well. She is so excited to know what is in her bento box each day.
You can’t go wrong including something from all food groups, but I always add 1 little Hershey’s kiss in the box as well– a kiss from mommy in the middle of the day definitely gets a smile from both of my kids.
As for what to buy to get started, you cannot go wrong with cookie cutters and food coloring markers. You can do all kinds of fun shapes and with the markers you can add faces to anything and everything!
Don’t get hung up on making the most complicated bento creations when you first start out. Buy a fun bento box and just try it out. You’ll notice that it makes you smile. My first one was a ninja panda. I did nothing more than put sliced carrots and cukes in it and took it to work. It made me happy. Then I started collecting the vegetable cutters and condiment bottles and other fun additions. Now I look at food differently…thinking whether or not it would be bento friendly. Almost anything can go in a bento box and EVERYTHING can be decorated to a lesser or greater degree. I’m still a beginner and bento lunches or snacks continue to make me smile.
I am very new to bento. i have no ideal where to start or the basics. wish there was a beginners description like a how to. I order yum yum bento books. I live in an area that have oreintal stores but no one knows about this. I wish that was a beginners kit. I am doing this because my son takes his lunch to school everyday and it sits in his locker. I want to know which ones are good foods to fix and keep in lockers, which ones are great for fall, winter, etc…How do yo all organizer things and keep i budget? HELP HELP

If Ur kids or u don’t get any veggies because u don’t like them will when u use a cutter it will make ur veggies cute and fun and if that does not work u can always make fruit salads with the cutters.
For people on the go and don’t hav time it is always a good thing to make up a planed and get all of the things u need the day before and just in case u should also hav a back up plan.
Will a good way to keep ur food fresh is to make sure that u bye good ingeatines for people on a budget u should go to the store and see what they have on sale and make at less two planed out lunches with what u hav and what ur r byeing but make sure that u don’t bye the same thing all the time. And u should see what time ur son has lunch so if it is eaily then u can make hot food and it will stay hot when he eats it but when he has a late lunch time then u can make cold food. But it is a good idea to hav a insolented bag.

I would recommend that a bento beginner to make sure to use a lot of veggies and plenty of fruits to make their bentos light and healthy. Oh, and have fun! c:
